ACLT – African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust

Our charity works tirelessly to raise awareness for the urgent need of lifesaving stem cell, blood and organ donors within the black, mixed race, Asian and ethnic minority communities in the UK. We work closely with these ethnicities due to the severe lack of individuals signed up to the donor registers from these communities.

Current & previous projects:

  • The Successful Schools 6th Form Peer-to-Peer Tutoring Initiative, where students learn and mentor peers to become potential donors.
  • We registered 5,000 Met Police staff as stem cell donors, of which 5 have gone forward to donate to patients in need.
  • A living (kidney) organ donation project to find 5 lifesaving donors for patients.

How would the prize money help our community projects?

We will be able to support patients through counselling and be able to produce literature for external stem cell, blood & organ awareness campaigns to find matching donors. We believe there should be an unrelated donor waiting for everyone who is in desperate need of a lifesaving transplant – if we all play our part together, we can help put an end to the many lives being needlessly lost.
