Wapping Bangladesh Association

Our charitable organisation is based in the Wapping area of London Borough of Tower Hamlets and is the only specifically Bangladeshi-led organisation in the area. We form the main point of contact for the Bangladeshi community. We were set up in 1980 to tackle poverty and deprivation within the community and now have a long-standing reputation in terms of service provision. We address social, cultural, welfare and economic needs and actively promote equal opportunities for all.

Current & previous projects:

  • The Wapping Health and Wellbeing Project - we addressed more than 120 vulnerable elderly people's health and well-being by running various health-related activities such as a luncheon club promoting healthy eating, complementary therapy sessions, exercise, yoga, walking sessions.
  • The Wapping Skills Development Project: we carried out a successful skills development project for 20 vulnerable women, who were economically inactive for a long period of time. We focussed on basic literacy, numeracy, ESOL, basic ICT and prepared them for the job market.
  • The Vocational Craft Project: we successfully delivered sewing lessons, including cutting and designing clothes to at least 30 vulnerable Bangladeshi and Somali women in London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

How would the prize money help our community projects?

The donation will be put towards running the activities of the 'Healthy Eating Project of Wapping Bangladesh Association', in which vulnerable elderly people living in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets will benefit. This project will help to improve their quality of life.
